Fairly typical northern CT course
If you haven't played golf in this area of CT, be prepared for lots of hills and lots of blind shots - and lots of lost balls if you have no one in the foursome to tell you where to aim. We often thought we were hitting to safe areas only to find water or fescue. The greens are in good shape with moderate undulations and speed. The fairways are good. You'll find a fair amount of crab grass in the rough. The practice range with free balls is a nice touch even with a shortened hitting distance. I'm not sure where the course is in relation to the casino but they are not adjacent. It is not as upscale as the Foxwoods course. The GolfNow cost was very good for a weekend. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to play this course again.
Good and bad
Pulled up, I guess they have a bag service. Got halfway to the pro shop and an employee grabbed my bag and said he would pull it right up while I check in. Checked in and waited 10 minutes, no clubs. Walked back to the parking lot and got the cart and clubs, should've just stuck with my original plan. Both divot repair bottles were empty and the cooler had a couple waters floating around in it. One plus with the cart is it has built in GPS for the course which came in very handy for yardage.
Let's get the price on a leash, do not pay the advertised price, use other sources to book. A fair price to pay would be 60$ with the range balls, complimentary water and club amenities. Needless to say you can book for even cheaper. Tee boxes are average, fairways above average, greens are horrible (pretty beat up, thin, a few are starting to die out). I must mention that unless you are with 10 feet you probably won't one putt. They need to take an excavator and build new greens because over half of them are tiered and rounded canyons. I would love to play a round with the club pro to see how he fares. That is my biggest complaint other than the price.
Would I play there again?..yes, only for the right price.
Above average course with below average staff
Picked a nice Friday afternoon for a Father's Day golf outing that quickly turned for the worse when rain took over the forecast. I tried calling in advance to ask the pro shop if we could reschedule our tee time due to a member of our foursome having hearing aids that can be damaged in the rain. We were quickly set aside due to booking through Golf Now and were told that we must play during our scheduled time. Arrived at the course in torrential rain that held throughout our round. Most greens had standing water or small rivers running across them. More than half, the cup was filled to the top with water. On the fourth hole there was actually a down tree across a cart path bridge preventing us from getting to our next shot. Once we made it back inside the pro shop was eager to leave for the day and were rude when returning demo clubs. Inside restaurant is small but the service was ok and the food was pretty good. Would never pay full price to play at Mohegan, it's at best a $65 course. Many other options in Eastern CT that have equal play and amenities.
Hot deal
I would have been disappointed if I paid the $140 rack rate but the $70 off golf now was worth the money. Everyone I dealt with was great & the layout was fun but they could take a little better care of the grounds.
First Time
Amazing course layout! Very manicured greens. Overall a great experience. Will be back
Deceptive
An interesting course that has had some major work on it over time, clearly. Some holes are just like nothing else on the course and would be considered "tricked up." But, I don't mind that. It's a lot more challenging than it suggests. The greens are an absolute bear, some are unfair, depending on where they set. Overall, a pleasant, fun experience. a bit pricey for the experience.
Wonderful Day, Worth the Ride....... But
Three friends and I, all seniors, were blessed with an early Summer day in October. In spite of the drought, the course was in excellent condition, the greens were challenging but true. At our ages, 70's and early 80's, we play for the enjoyment of the game and and out of long standing respect for its traditions; none of us was put off by scores which would have been unthinkable twenty years ago. we kept pace of play up by adhering to 'ready golf' and playing 'forward'. Unhappily, we had an experience which was totally inexcusable: three of us had inquired about rates which folks at our stage of life can afford. We were told that seniors and vets pay half-rate ($70) on Monday. What they neglected to tell us is that you needed to present a Mohegan Sun Players Card to get the special rate. Luckily, I and one other friend had ours in our cars and our other two friends had some sort of one-time play offer for several courses in their bags. I had guaranteed the reservation with my Visa card and, had we not played because of the $140 standard fee, I wonder if we would have been forced to either play or have me charged $560.00? At any rate, we should have been informed of the Player's Card requirement up front. Final comment, folks at the course, bag boys, starter, bartender and waitress were very friendly and helpful..... wish I could say the same for the pro shop personnel.
Fun Layout.
Course was in great condition for Oct. Plays longer then yardage suggests. Patience is needed as it is a casino course and therefore plays slower then a usual public course
Nice course but needs work
The course is open and played very nice. There are a couple of greens that make no sense. I'm talking look like moguls with no chance of making one putt!! Found it unacceptable that on a Sunday there was no one to get our bags at bag drop and no beverage cart on the course. Being a casino course I expected better in terms of hospitality.
Awesome course 1st class service vip like
Awesome course 1st class service vip like. As soon as I drove up concierge was at my service. Pleasant attitude was genuinely interested in making me feel welcomed. Answered all my questions. I had no tee time and was a walk on. Took great care of me fit me in the tee times, course was great and spent valuable great time with my 16 year old daughter. I highly recommend this course. Super vip service.
Great coarse
Our Monday night golf league had our end of the year tournament here. Coarse was in great shape, the staff was very nice and food was excellent. Hopefully we will have our end of the year tournament here next year.
Might be a good course
This might be a good golf course, but I couldn't tell, due to maintenance issues. I played in late September, and the greens had been recently aerated. No complaints on that score; you play anywhere that time of year, you're likely to run into aeration.
What I will complain about, however is the fact that the greens had not been mowed for...I don't know, a week? two weeks?
I can't remember ever playing greens where the blades of grass were 3/4 of an inch long and flattened down like a bald man's comb-over. It's not much fun, I can tell you.
Then there was the helpful staff. The carts are gas powered (an abomination, in my opinion: there is no excuse for an $80 golf course to use them), but at least they have GPS in them, which proved very useful, given the number of blind shots on the course. However, the cart they gave me didn't have a GPS. There were just some wires hanging down where the device was supposed to be.
So I asked the kid who had put my clubs in this cart "WTF? Don't I get a GPS?" He told me they were all used in the outing and were dirty. OMG! Imagine using a cart that had mud on the hubcaps! I eventually convinced him I would rather have the GPS than a clean cart.
I had tried to arrange to get the round paid for with comps from the casino that owns the place, but when I got there, the counter guy didn't know anything about that, so I had to pay cash. In all justice, I don't know if this was the course's screw-up or the casino's.
I stopped at the halfway house for a hot dog. Guess what? They were all out. What a surprise.Be forewarned.
The golf course is nowhere near the Mohigan Sun Casino, if you plan to play while you are staying there. It's hidden away on some tiny back country road, and many of the roads to it are either poorly marked, or not marked at all, so bring your own GPS.
I think this might be a fun course to play, if the greens had been cut, but based on what I played on, it's hard to tell.
Bogey Golf
Hadn't played this course in over 20 years. Now that Mohegan owns it, it still hasn't improved that much. Greens on the front nine were in poor shape. At least that improved on the back nine. It was very strange that all the pins had the same color flag. I was given a cart that had no working GPS so the pin yardage was a mystery. Frustrating because many of them sloped back to front. If you were above the hole, it was impossible to lag it close. Not worth the price, Lake of Isles is a much better choice.
the course was in great shape--and the staff could not have been any better---loved every thing about the day--including the BBQ at the 10th hole
great time-great layout -great people
Tough Greens
Besides being right behind a threesome and a foursome that may have been the worst combo of slow and bad golfers, the five-hour round was enjoyable. The course itself is awesome, with some large, undulating greens that are very quick. Always be below the hole here! From tee-to-green, this course does not present many challenges if played correctly. However, the greens are where I lost some strokes. Definitely would return, as the course was great!
A challenge and fun
Great condition, good pace of play, my only complaint was not being able to bring the cart to the car. This was very inconveinent and so unusual. The carts acrually shut down if you even get close to the parking lot. A big downside to an otherwords nice experience
Great Course
Golf course was in great shape!! Staff was excellent!! Some very scenic holes and some interesting ones as well!! Greens were fast even though we played in a drizzle for the first five holes and had a good rain prior to that. Drainage was great, no standing water anywhere. It was a joy to play here!!
I agree when we left there was no one there to put clubs in car not to mention the fact that there sets just setting there with no one to watch them .........take what you need leave the rest!!!!
