Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2019.
Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Amherst is one of western Massachusetts' premier courses. It plays across a gently rolling landscape accented with mature tree that offers an especially scenic round in the fall thanks to the changing colors of the foliage. The course has some subtle contours but it is still pleasantly walkable and offers just enough of a challenge to appeal to low and high handicappers alike. The layout consists of an interesting variety of holes including some that are long, a few doglegs, and also some birdie opportunities. The golf course finishes with one of the area's most memorable holes. This long par 4 calls for an accurate tee shot in order to avoid the river on the left and the rough on the right. The challenges don't end there either with a second shot to a wide, elevated green protected by large, deep bunkers.

Great time, just slow play.
I have played here probably a dozen times. There are many older players, some walkers. Of the walkers, they are very slow. I find myself waiting on every shot whenever I play here.
Great course though.

Great under the conditions
Turns out only the front nine was open due to incredible rains this week. The pro sent me out early with another Golf Now guy and we had a blast. The course was very playable despite the water and the greens were really solid. When we teed off the course seemed crowded because of the 9-hole limitation but in fact we played in just over 3-hours. What I like about Hickory is that it's not too narrow but there are a bunch of challenging holes for the 10+ handicapper. I'll be back several times this summer. Good job with the rain!!
Good morning, Thank you for taking the time to leave a four star review! While only the front nine were open, we are happy to hear you had a great time at Hickory Ridge Golf Course and that the greens were in great shape despite the heavy rains. Play this course a couple times a year. It's a great course to play for the money. The only unfortunate thing was the course was a little wet from the rain the prior 2 days, some fairways a little spongy, 1 par 4 moved to a par 3, but overall the greens were in great shape. Would definitely play here again.

Good greens ???? layout?
Good green conditions made up for otherwise so-so course conditions. Bunkers looked like they had been ignored for some time and rough was very inconsistent and "spotty". Layout was unique in that many lone trees were in middle of fairways and blocked fairway views off many tees. Pace of play was okay. Drive carts slow in fairways as they're "washboard like" and very bumpy.
Hickory Ridge
Course is fairing pretty well given almost no rain this year. Greens are very solid and consistent... fairways a bit spotty but thats due to the lack of rain. Overall, great value for money, they have a few hot deals per day that I would recommend booking.
I've seen it in better shape
Very nice course that I've played several times but not in the past 6 years. I've seen it in better shape. Lots of character and several challenging holes without the trees that sit in landing zones
top five favorite in western Mass.
This course is always in good shape and never disappoints. Pace of play is 4 hours and very walkable. #18 may be the best(toughest) finishing hole in the valley.
busy portta potty on 7th. hole
clubhouse was closed as were bathrooms due to sewage backup so no food but a limited beer selection in pro shop. two of us played nine and met a third at 4:30 for back nine. he was told there were no more carts and gave a $2.00 discount, while we could see plenty of carts that were being put away by staff. when asked staff they said they were closing at 5pm. and were done for the day. there were still a lot of players out with carts and 3rd player was a senior and we all had cart bags they should had let one more cart out
Old course needs updating
First time playing, this course could use updating, fairways can be rough at spots, very dry, riding cart on washboard fairways is not fun.
Overall it needs updating from the clubhouse to the course, it could be much better.
Excellent Track
Played this last week with the Safari Club. Perfect weather. Course was in excellent shape considering the lack of rain. Fairways, rough and greens were all green. The greens were the best we've seen all summer. Challenging and interesting layout. Staff was helpful and friendly. Had a nice luncheon afterwards. All-in-all, a great day!
ON AUGUST 3RD 2016 I PLAYED THIS COURSE WITH THE SAFARI GOLF ASSOCIATION
This the second time i played this golf course
the fairways and greens were in excellent condition considering the lack of rain this summer
the staff and the food were as good in the past, they do a great job of satisfing the customer
Rural Golf
I played This course with my friends in The Safari Club for the second time and I enjoyed it even more than the first.
The course was in excellent shape and greens were awesome. This is a flat tract, great for walking, and enjoying the wildlife. I thought the pin positions were fairly difficult with many right on the front or just over the bunkers. A few if the greens had false fronts which made the front pins even harder, but I like a challenge.
Great weather, great course, great foursome, fantastic time!
Getting BetterEvery Year
Played here with the Safari Club this past Wednesday and what a treat it was. I've played here for over 35 years and each year the course seems better than the year before. It has really matured into a first-class semi-private golf club and deserves a lot more play.
There's no doubt about it. The greens at Hickory will be among the best anyone could play this year.
If you take advantage of their 19th hole you won't be disappointed a bit. Good food, friendly staff and plenty of cold adult beverages.
A Great test of Golf!
I played Hickory Ridge yesterday with The Safari Club and as always we were reminded that "Hick" plays long and has many difficult holes.
I have been playing there for years and it always is in great shape but this year I thought that the greens were exceptional with no ball marks on most of them and they putted so true.
The entire course was in great shape even though we have experienced a long drought this summer! Great job guys on a wonderful Safari Club event.
Safari Club Member
Nice course,, will play it again. Everything was green and for this time of the year that is a plus. Big greens and smooth. Food is good also.
Great experience!
Played the course today (8/3) with the Safari Club and had a great experience. Course was in exceptional condition from tee box to green. Staff and food were first class.
Will Play Again
Greens in good shape and layout makes you play position golf on several holes. Many holes are long enough to challenge your long iron play.
Good course and friendly staff.
Second time I have visited and played here in eight months. Course conditions were consistent over that time.
Recommend you play this course.
