The course is ok. The front nine is not well marked and hard to determine tee placement especially if you are a first time visitor to the course. The cart paths are very uneven and some very steep. The staff was very friendly and courteous. I would probably not play the course again.
Very nice course
Just bear in mind that this is a low handicap golf course. It is a very unforgiving course for the average golfer. The course was in very nice shape but the average golfer could expect to shoot 5 to 10 strokes more than your average game due to the layout of the course. If you're up for a challenge you're on the right course LOL.
Fun formerly private layout needs some love
I've played Tower Ridge dozens of times in my life, mostly while younger, and while it was still private. Though recent years haven't been so kind to the course, it's worth checking out if in good shape, mostly because of the tiny, steeply pitched greens and a cool stretch of holes - 5 through 8 - up on Avon Mountain.
I really enjoyed Tower Ridge golf course.
I really enjoyed Tower Ridge golf course. A very challenging layout. The best greens Ive played on all year. Nice amenities.
I did get a little lost on a few holes seeing it was my first time playing the course (now that I have played it, it will be easy to navigate my way around).
I had a great time and look forward to going back there .
An excellent value.
The price we paid was an excellent value for a course this challenging. We found it to be in good condition for this time of year. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Hilly layout
Course has an interesting layout. Wide range of
shots neessary. Greens & fairways in good shape.
Nice views
Forward tee boxes were in poor condition. Several were patchy with weeds and dirt. No starter on the day we played, leaving players to "negotiate" starting, although the pro shop staffer told us we were free to start ahead of our tee time (while a group was waiting for their 3rd and 4th).
Hole signage could be improved.
Still a nice course to play, especially in autumn because of the foliage and views.
Good thing it was free
Got a pass for a free round while at the Hartford golf show. I would not pay to play here. Completely overrated for a former private course. Can't imagine anyone paying to belong here. Poor maintenance, weird layout. Only the greens were decent but slow. Does not live up to the hype especially with Blue Fox Run and Tunxis so close.
Fun little course
The staff is great and the course was good shape
Service
Course was in great shape. Nice layout. Tried to call in order on 9th tee. No one answered the phone and when we stopped 25 minutes for some subpar food. No soap or water in the ball washers. Would play again but would bring my own lunch
Early Season
Course was in ok shape. Greens were quick but tee boxes lacked. Tight course with a lot of trees. Don't walk as there is a lot of up and down between and during holes. Stop by the tavern after your round for some very good food.
tower ridge
great day ,great course, had a lot of fun.will do it again Harry
Great Course
First time playing the course. Was in good shape for how early in the season it was. Great, challenging layout. Super friendly staff. Golf Carts were top of the line. Would play again and again.
Target Golf
I have played this course a few times previously and I would for sure call it target golf. On most holes you can't go bombing away, you have to pick a spot to play to and then attack from there. I would absolutely play here again.
Getting much better
After a rough year in 2015, Tower Ridge greens are healing nicely. Still a few rough areas but getting much better. And the new golf carts are fantastic!
Let Down
lived in simsbury for years always wanted to play this course when it was private.. What a let down!!! It's not even a good public course. I can't even get into it.....5,6,and 7 are like a shooting gallery. I feel cheated out of a great day of golf.
Fantastic View; Challenging Design
TL;DR: Great Views and awesome challenging holes and greens. Beautiful design. Not maintained well enough. Overall great value.
Details:
In the class of publicly accessible courses (and not counting the PGA quality ones), the course design and views you get might be one of the more unique ones out there. nestled on the side of Talcott Mountain, the views you get are outstanding and makes for a pleasant and relaxing round - even if your round isn't going so well. Several times I found myself saying "Wow" when I get to the tee box just looking at how the hole is laid out. It's a fantastic piece of property. Holes are unique and challenging, greens are never flat, and fairways are narrow and most require more than average strategy on approaches - great for mid handicappers. High handicappers will often find themselves on other fairways and zig zagging through the tough greens.
And also, I got in at an odd time on a Hot Deal, so it was so a no brainer especially at a deal price.
Now the not so good... The course is not as nicely maintained as your local municipal course. Some tee boxes look like they've been forgotten, and some greens have a lot of sand. This is really a shame - as it is such a magnificent layout/design. I also found a lot of untouched ball marks on the greens - but the players are as much to blame for this.
Also, the holes are a bit narrow. Good for a challenge, but a lot of times I found wild shots from other holes heading my direction as I was standing on the tee box. Not a fault of the course for having such a tight layout, but high handicappers will cause more havoc here than other wide open courses.
Pace was also a problem. I got in at a down time (hence the Hot Deal), and I was kept having to wait for the party ahead of me to finish up. When I finished, around 4 PM or so, people started pouring in - I can only imagine how slow their rounds would have been. Busy time means super slow pace for sure.
PROS:
- fantastic views
- very challenging hole layouts and elevations
- top notch design
- greens that will mess with your mind.
- great value for money.
CONS:
- slow pacing
- not as well kept
- some greens are not clean; have a lot of sand
- cart paths need repair
Agreed that 2015 was a down year for the course. As a former league champion there, this course is at the top of my list. However, conditions last year led to me finding this course unplayable. Good to hear they're making improvements!
