North/South at Elmridge Golf Club

The Elmridge “Red South” course, the nine I played today, sports a decent enough layout. It’s bolstered especially by a pair of nice par-3’s and a couple of good par-4’s. The rest of the supporting cast consists of essentially average holes.

What truly disappointed today, though, was the conditioning of the Red: the greens were aerated, the fairways in poor condition overall, the rough only a bit better, and the tees sparse on grass. None of this was abetted much by lots of leaves on some of the greens along with heavy dew on all of them, still present when I finished at about 11:30 or so. Yes, it’s been a brutal summer, but the course was in comparatively weak condition compared to what I’ve been playing over the past three weeks. I did get a bit of a look at the White West Nine here, and it seemed in better condition: the greens appeared good based on a direct check, and everything else—at least from a distance—respectable.

Best Holes:
The pair of mid-length par-3’s clearly stood out, the fifth being an impressive downhill tiger over a marshy pond with a 40-foot drop from tee to putting surface; the 7th having the look of a signature hole with a beautifully raised green defending nicely against less-than-perfect approaches.

Others of Interest:
The third is an elegant, rightward bending four-par of 403, playing uphill to a slightly perched green that tilts markedly. And I couldn’t help but like the outside-the-box finishing hole, a fairly hard-bending dogleg left that demands a solid tee shot to reach the crest of a huge hill. What’s left is a pitch further uphill to a small green.

In the end, it was hard to work up real enthusiasm for the Red South today, though I’m expecting better things when I return to try the other two—which, from what I learned, are played here as the 'traditional' eighteen by most. Incidentally, the Red South was populated by few golfers; the other two nines were filled, and the upper parking lot here full.

Course was challenging and in great condition considering the drought this summer. Lunch was ok. I’d give the restaurant a 2nd chance as we only had sandwiches but my bread was pretty burnt. But hey, we came to play golf!

Due to the drought, fairways were patched and most grass was gone. Greens were in good shape. I’ve never seen so many broken tees on tee boxes.

If you like playing off dirt and straw then this course is for you. Otherwise I would avoid this course!

Put together a foursome with two friends and my son. It was a beautiful day, sun, breeze, and 18 holes awaiting our play. The tee boxes were in good shape and the fairways green, although the rough has seen It’s share of the recent drought conditions. The greens were somewhat slow but rolled true. We were never pressed by the groups behind and kept up with the group ahead with little wait. The fairways are wide and the trees groomed underneath to allow the occasional errant shot to have a chance of escaping the looming branches with a properly executed low shot. There are bunkers and occasional water and nature areas to test one’s accuracy. Doglegs also allow for proper placement of shots to the turns to allow the next shot to find the green. All in all, a pleasant day in the outdoors!

Greens were in good shape, but a majority of the tee boxes were in bad shape. Fairs were were very rough in places.

The lack of rain the past 6 weeks has taken a toll on the fairways and particularly the rough, but the greens are amazing. I hadn’t played there in a couple of years but it was just as fun and interesting as I remember. Great staff will make sure you have a good time.

The greens were in very good shape but the fairways were burnt for the most part. We all joked at how hard the tee boxes were, I broke 3 tees just trying to push the tee into the ground. Overall for this time of year and such a lack of rainfall, it was a lot of fun.

This used to be our go to course over the last 15 years. It was this spring too (probably played 10 times this year alone).

However, played there yesterday (7/26/2020) and will never go back.

Sometime in the past couple weeks, they reduced the area of the greens by probably 20-30%. The fairways are like concrete and in many areas the grass is DEAD, not just a brown from going dormant. It was a dust bowl in some areas especially near the tees (imagine going through a cloud of dust as a leading cart drives off.) Some tee boxes had 100-200 broken tees in them.

I don't know what has happened but it is now terrible and based on what is going on with the greens, some key decision of some sort has been made to let the course go to heck and from my observation, this is probably permanent. Was worse than many much cheaper municipal courses...but retained it's still much higher price.
