Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Amherst is one of western Massachusetts' premier courses. It plays across a gently rolling landscape accented with mature tree that offers an especially scenic round in the fall thanks to the changing colors of the foliage. The course has some subtle contours but it is still pleasantly walkable and offers just enough of a challenge to appeal to low and high handicappers alike. The layout consists of an interesting variety of holes including some that are long, a few doglegs, and also some birdie opportunities. The golf course finishes with one of the area's most memorable holes. This long par 4 calls for an accurate tee shot in order to avoid the river on the left and the rough on the right. The challenges don't end there either with a second shot to a wide, elevated green protected by large, deep bunkers.

Great Golf Course
The course was in great shape. The greens were rolling fantastic. The fairways were a little burnt in a few spots but that is due to the lack of rain and hot weather we have been having. Its been a few years since I played the course and it has been in great shape every time I have played it. The only thing is never let people go off the back on a weekend. Have everyone go off the front.
Solid course
This course is tough for sure, but fair. Flat tee boxes are nice compared to most in the area. Soft fairways for easy ball striking and most importantly the greens always roll beautifully. They can be quick at times, but that just means they are true and that's better for accuracy. Keep it in the fairway and you'll be fine, long hitters will find trouble in the rough, but overall the quality for the dollar makes this course worth every penny spent!!!
Great Shape!
The course from tee to green is in great shape, definitely be back.
Always worth the trip up to play
I've played hickory ridge before and I always find the course to be in pretty good shape. This round was pretty much the same, but the greens were a little slow than the practice green. It took me four holes to realize that I needed to hit the ball a little harder. Overall, I got a really great deal on golfnow so it made the experience worth it. I would definitely play this course again. It's a pretty good course to play
Getting even better
I've played Hickory Ridge many times over the years and the conditions are the best they've been. Fairways were a little shaggy in spots but the greens are excellent and full of grass...will be playing again soon
Very nice track
Really enjoyed this course. Reachable and accessible greens.
Worth the Drive
Didn't know what to expect, but happily surprised with this course. From the tips, where I played the course, it's 6700 yards that plays more like 7000+. Strategically placed water hazards, some holes wide open, others tight but always with a bailout side. Variety of holes to work it left to right or right to left off the tee, again, with a bailout side so the course never feels too tight. Greens were in decent shape for late March and you can tell the fairways are excellent. Want to play this again later in the spring when everything is green. You will love the challenge!
Nice Day at Hickory Ridge
My buddy and I golfed on a beautiful fall day in early November. The pro greeted us in a very friendly manner. He made us feel welcomed, right away. We played the front nine very quickly and the back nine at a reasonable pace. The course was in great shape. The fairways were in nice shape and the greens were fast. The rough areas were "rough". To me, that means the grounds crew is focusing on first things first (greens, fairways, and tees). We had a great day and I look forward to golfing there again.
Decent value for the $31 we paid
Course had a pretty nice layout, where you could usually bail out to one side or the other. The pace of play was pretty good for a weekend. The only issue was the greens which looked like most of the courses did this spring, somewhat spotty and lumpy.
Another Valley Gem
Booked w/ golf now, great value/quality. Before T off be sure to get course directions for front 9, signage is vague and no map on scorecard. That said, forecasted T storms held off and we had course almost to ourselves "awesome". This gorgeous Cornish/Robinson design is a challenging course that can quickly beat up the scorecard if you lose focus and fairways. Hazards are bountiful (sand water trees creeks)and greens are well above average. Hickory ridge is a must play for the avid golfer.
Great layout
This is a great course to play in the fall. Not to difficult a course to walk
POOR JUDGEMENT BY MANAGEMENT
I was very disappointed with the management"s decision to open the course to the public on this day. They had a Special Olympics event going on, which I applaud in every way. For the course to open itself up to the paying public and have them follow the Special Olympics, just so they could make a couple of hundred more dollars, was a very poor decision, in very bad taste, and showed me that they didn't care about their customers. My wife and I had a 3:49 t-time, expecting to breeze through being so late. When we arrived at the course, they had no carts available yet, so our t-time got delayed by about twenty minutes. Like I said I applaud the fact that they had the Special Olympians there, they were having a blast and was heart warming to see, but at the same time it took us just under 2 and a half hours to play just six holes. I am sorry you just do not do that sort of thing to make a few more dollars. There were two, twosomes that had teed off behind us, that had left by about the third hole. We waited until the sixth before we had to leave, having other plans for later that night. They were good enough to give us a nine hole rain check, but my question still remains "Why would you open up the course to the playing public to begin with???" I have played this course about 8 or 9 times this year alone, and up until now, have always had a pleasant experience, and I do really enjoy it here. After this past weekends' experience though will think twice about coming back.
good hot deal
Convenient, good value, nice layout, a little wet, some greens bumpy, but overall worth it!
Good Course in Amherst
Teed off about 4:00pm. Didn't even make it through the first hole as it started raining for about 15-20 minutes before it cleared up again and the sun came back out. The course is in pretty good shape overall as the fairways are plush and the greens are pretty smooth. The only thing about the greens is that there are a lot of ball marks, but you cant blame the course for that (FIX YOUR BALL MARKS!)
The only thing I would say about the course to improve it is to add some type of picture of each hole. There are a lot of shots where you don't know what the yardage is to cross a creek or where the hole goes after you do.
One more thing that kind of got on my nerves is that we finished our round of 18 around 8:15 but had a match going in our foursome that ended in a tie. We wanted to try and break it by playing the 18th hole again quick seeing as there was no one behind us. As we were about to tee off, guy from pro shop came up in cart and told us that carts had to be in by 8pm. Seeing as we tee'd off at 4:00 and we ended around 8:15 for a pretty decent normal time for a round, don't you think that is something you should tell a group before they go out? Now was it really that the cart had to be in, or was is it the fact we tried to play an extra hole? Idk but when we were driving in to the clubhouse we could still see some carts out on the back 9. Just didn't sit well with me. If your concerned about the extra hole, please say that but don't make up excuses.
Overall though, course is nice and worth a play, but just be careful with some tee shots as you don't really know where the hole goes or yardage where a creek crosses.
One of the better Amherst area courses.
Hickory Ridge is a favorite of mine due to the usually excellent turf conditions and due to the challenging layout. Greens are quite large and lush but on the day we played they were unusually slow and the ball rolled erratically. Usually the greens are smoother and cut closer - perhaps in this time in summer the greens keeper is trying to keep them from burning out as they were long and not as consistent as I have usually experienced here. The finishing holes front and back are quite long and the overall layout is not real forgiving but moderately challenging. This is a great course for the region and one of the best public access courses in Central Mass. The value is very good. Both the quality of fairways and greens are usually good - though as mentioned earlier - the greens were a bit "fluffy". The course is also a good walking course and has water in a couple of spots. I do strongly recommend this course and feel it is one of the better ones you can play in the greater Amherst area.
A bit quirky
I came away from the course with a different feeling than most reviews. I certainly expected more of the greens which had some bare spots when I played. Variety of holes is good, however there are just 2 stupid holes numbers 5 and 6. on 5 if you drive between the chute of trees, unless you hit a 30 yard slice the only place you can go is in the rough.. If you do hit the fairway there is a huge tree blocking your second shot in the middle of the fairway. Number 6 is only 328 yards but you need to carry your tee shot 210 to carry a creek. If you lay up you have to hit to an area the size of a blanket and have no shot to the green on your second. There are no diagrams on any holes and no way of knowing yardages to reach or carry trouble. I would only play there again at the Golf Now hot buy price, not for full price
Hickory Ridge
This course was at best "OKay".
Very narrow and look as if the bare minimal is being done to maintain it.
Range very poor, Fairways needs TLC. Green very nice and no cart path between holes.
Great shape
Beautiful course, was in great shape. I will definatly return
Fun Saturday Round of Golf
Course was a great value. Challenging enough to require I use every club in my bag. Definitely worth playing.
Fun and Challenging
Nice course in early season conditions. I imagine this course will be wonderful as the season progresses. A layout of the holes either on the scorecard or on the hole signs would be helpful. I found water a couple of times that I didn't know was there. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Would definitely play again.
