Opened in 1921, Winchendon Golf Club (formerly known as Winchendon School Golf Club) has remained almost untouched since Donald Ross redesigned the course in 1926. The classic design is only 5,512 yards from the back tees. Though it may be shorter than most modern courses, it is no less challenging. The layout is narrow with hilly fairways and small, undulating greens. You'll need to have an accurate short game in addition to creative shot-making skills. Local knowledge of the hilly terrain comes in handy when attempting to overcome the golf course's many tricky lies. Without any homes bordering the fairways, golfers can enjoy scenic vistas of the New England countryside. The third and seventh tees provide a particularly stunning view of Mt. Monadnock in the distance. Winchendon Golf Club is especially worth playing in the fall when a vibrant wash of red, orange, and gold colors the landscape.

Great course
Great course and very helpful staff and player friendly course. Greens were immaculate.
the par 3"s are hard to get on with tee shot
the ninth hole has atemporary green .the bar and lunch area was being remodeled and not open until the week end
Great golf course at a great price.
This is a great course at a great price. The greens were well maintained and the staff were very friendly and courteous.
Classic Donald Ross
Great mix of holes, you really don't need your driver, but you will certainly need your wedges and your putter.Greens have false fronts and nice drop offs for shots that just happen to miss abit left or right. There are about 3 to 4 drivable par 4's but if you miss you will pay the price.Great course if you want to check out the foliage too.Nice views !!!
short and tight
This a Donald Ross course designed in 1924. The routing is different than the original layout and because of this some holes don't seem to fit the eye. In typical Ross fashion the greens are small and most are elevated with no room behind them. Although a short course it is very tight, be it the roads andO.B surrounding the front 9 or the tree lined fairways on the back. Definitely takes a few rounds to get a feel for the layout.
Worth a trip
Fun day and very interesting course. You will need to let go and let yourself play the ball up because there are many bad lies but its a fun round. Need a cart too! Very nice staff returned clubs that we had lost on another hole! Short challenging holes with crazy undulating greens required super accurate shots! Fun challenge, nice day!
The small, undulating greens are very tricky. Position is everything.
We only paid $10 to play, so really,no complaints. However, since it was an hour drive, we probably wont return. Too many blind shots, and the lack of irrigation makes the fairways almost like hardpack. Many burned out areas. Staff was very friendly, though.
Donald Ross at his finest in New England!
Wow what a great course. A true Donald Ross gem! With short holes, narrow fairways and sloping greens you couldn't ask for a better Donald Ross design. The fairways where a bit beat up as well as the tee boxes but the greens all 18 of them where so consistent and in great shape that I can’t wait to go back again! Views from holes 3 and 7 where great and I love par 4’s that can be reached in 1. It is a hard course for the first time playing it as you don’t know the holes but I was very happy shooting a 80 from the tips and can’t wait to go back to try and beat my score. I would play this course again and again as it is a great value for the price!
Play smart not long
This course is fun to play but you must play smart. Keep the driver in your bag or maybe in the trunk of your car. Most holes are short and tight with rewards for placement rather than length. The pro is very friendly as is the staff. We went the first Sunday in August. The greens were excellent the fairways pretty good. Some good restaraunts neerby so it makes a nice to play and enjoy your day..
Great views! Keep your head on a swivel! Fore!
Had a great experience at this course. Hole 7 has an amazing view of the surround scenery. For the price I will certainly be going back. Talked for a while with one of the grounds keepers after my round, who was very friendly and visibly loved working here.
The only downside was the holes were very tight and close together so I consistently had other players shooting off my fairway and had a few close calls. The greens are decently tough which could be a good thing, if that's for you.
Good value for nice course despite being a little soggy from recent rains
Winchendon School Golf Club is a great value. While recent rains have left some areas more than a little soggy, the tee boxes and greens are in terrific shape. We teed off of the 10th to start because of a tournament later that day but I actually liked going back to front. Most of the back 9 are long par 4s while the front 9 has the hilly up and down holes with nice vistas near the school buildings. This will be even better when the course has had a chance to dry out a bit.
Must-play Donald Ross
Given this is a Donald Ross course, I decided to make the 1 hour drive west and am glad I did. Extremely challenging course with a traditional Ross feel. Good number of blind shots, small, fast greens and massive penalties if you miss your target. The trees here are thick so there is little chance to hit them and hope to carry through. I found out the hard way many times. There were some places where crab grass has taken over the fairway and the pace of play wasn't great, but otherwise this is a true Ross gem.
Short, but sweet!
Winchendon will tease you with a couple drivable par 4's, then taunt you on some other holes. The #2 par 5 is relatively short, but good luck getting very far on your tee shot! The #6 green will keep returning your putts to you and the #18 par 3 is a lot tougher than it looks. The view from #7 (par 3) tee box is prime as is the elevation drop to the green. My biggest gripe with the layout is that holes #3 through 6 are side-by-side and don't offer much protection from an errant hit on an adjacent fairway. Wear a helmet! ;)
Staff was great.
Couse very wet and play was too slow. It took 5 hours to play 18 holes. Early in the year greens were very wet still and not well maintained.
For the money it was okay.
Challenging and picturesque
Got a great deal for a single walking. It was a bit of a workout but well worth it. Great driving range and putting green. Will be back.
This course is a pleasure to play.
Winchendon Golf Course is a very well taken care of golf course that is priced well below courses that are not nearly as nice. The staff is helpful and is very knowledgeable. I have played this course many times, and I'm always impressed with how nice the course is maintained.
good course, confusing to navigate at first
this is a very good course with some challenging holes. The layout is somewhat confusing the first time you are there but if you go more than once i am sure it would not be an issue. This is not a course that easly walked, it can be done but there are a lot of hills and if you are not in decent shape you might struggle walking this course. The course is kept in good condition and the staff were awesome when we arrived, the carts are 100% electric too. As for some of the more challenging holes, there is a par 5 420 yard hole 2, dont get excited over the distance becasue it is up hill and there is a good dogleg to the left, the last hole is a par 3 155 yard hole that is uphill and it much more difficult than it looks, add two clubs to this hole
Nice course, friendly helpful staff
Enjoyed a wonderfull afternoon with my grandson and his mother. Golf carts were clean, ready to go, course in very good condition, staff friendly and helplfull. We will be back again soon!!
The back 9 is pretty good, greens are in good shape course overall is in good condition
The front 9 is way to short, 4 of the par 4's look like long par 3's. The back 9 is a better challenge and don't feel as tho they were slapped into a space that was to small to put a course in.
