Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston has a reputation for being one of the best public golf courses in central Massachusetts. The club is conveniently less than an hour from Boston. The rolling hills that the course covers are its defining feature. The golf course itself is perched atop a large hill with views spanning the Wachusett Reservoir and the Wachusett Mountain. The layout tumbles across a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. Scoring well on this golf course will depend on your ability to navigate the numerous hills. Wachusett Country Club's front nine is wide open with several challenging holes that wind uphill while the bunker-filled back nine will test your iron skills. Although both nines are about equal in difficulty, the front nine can be especially tough on windy days.

Course is well conditioned and staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

One practical change that would facilitate a higher rating is more yardage markers thst are easy to find on each hole. In the past it when I have played there the yardage markers are few and far between. They are also hard to find as I don't think there are yardage markers on every hole. In addition I would question the accuracy of the existing yardage markers.

In comparison to other courses Wachusett plays long even from the white markers and would thusfavor the longer hitters. Elevation changes on a number of holes provide some challenge. Because the course sits on top of a hill, windy days can present a significant challenge to even the better and more consistent ball strikers.

Walk on greens fees seem reasonable but membership programs are very pricey.

Put this course on your list if your golf plans take you to Cental Mass.
