Ellinwood Country Club
About
Ellinwood Country Club in Athol boasts a unique 18-hole layout with nine holes designed by Donald Ross and another nine designed by Geoffrey Cornish. Having two different designers gives the golf course plenty of variety, especially since the holes are intermingles. Cornish's greens are bigger and flatter while the Ross holes feature some of his characteristic greens and bunkers. Water hazards come into play as well and you'll face a few tricky doglegs and blind shots. There are some challenging holes but overall it's not an overly difficult golf course. The average player can still approach it with confidence. With a secluded location in rural western Massachusetts, Ellinwood Country Club offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The 11th hole, with a winding brook that runs alongside the fairway before cutting in front of the green, is particularly scenic.

Challenging course
Good course with plenty of challenges. Staff was very friendly, arrived early, we were let out right away. The pro gave us an explanation of the course layout. Greens are excellent, some fairways not so much. Still had a lot of fun.
Give this course a try, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a fun little course. I will certainly recommend this course to anyone who wants to play golf and enjoy the game.
Nice place
I played with my son and it was great as usual. We got out early and paed alone. Pace was good and the greens were excellent.
Old New England Course
Playing with the Safari Club, western Mass's premier travel golf club, I had the good fortune of playing this Donald Ross design. With many undulations, mounds and sloping fairways, your always have some difficult lies to contend with. Average in length, the course is a fair challenge and rewards good shots and punishes poor shots. Watch out for hole 15, a 400 yard par 4 with a long and blind second shot to a depressed green. Not a course for walkers.
Good value
I hope that Ellinwood’s members continue to support this course so that it can play to its potential once again. The greens were in good shape and rolled nicely. The tee boxes were well groomed, and the few bunkers that I was in seemed okay. I guess where this course falls short is the fairways and cart paths. Lots of bare spots, so preferred lies is the only way to go. The carts and cart paths are prett,y dated and rough. Someone with a bad back would not be too happy after riding for 18 holes in spite of how careful you drive. The people are nice there, and the price is right. I hope to see more improvements in the future.
Safari Club Outing
Nice course. Kind of hard. Greens were fast and I couldn't read them. Hilly fairways. But I had fun with the Safari Club.
Great course
Play this course often and has yet to disappoint!! Greens are in great condition as well as fairways!!
Variety of pars 3,4,& 5
I enjoy the par 5s, which tend to bend to the right. I fade with my driver and it plays nicely.
Great value, greens were terrific!
Got a terrific deal, went back to this course we hadn't played in years. The course was in very good shape, especially the greens, which rolled true and pretty fast even though they felt a little doing. Friendly staff, and the pace was perfect, even with a tournament on the course in front of us. I'll be back soon.
Good value for hot deals
For 18 holes for 18.00 with a cart, the deal is tough to beat during slow times. The course is fairly challenging, but not too hard. The condition of the course is fair, the cart paths are in horrible shape. I go here when I am looking to get in a quick 9 close to home or have time during the week for the low priced 18 hole hot deal.
A true hidden gem
The day was a perfect golf kinda day.
Me and a friend tee’d off at 11:00 and made it around in four hours. The pace of play was whatever we wanted it to be.
The course was in excellent condition other than a few over seeded greens.
There needs to be better signage at this course for direction to the next tee and the cart paths need some major work to remove the humps that will throw you out of the cart. It’s a tougher course than I remembered , with Gorgeous tight fairways and quick undulating greens.
The price was worth the hour drive to find this hidden gem.
Overall it was a great day.
I’ll be back !

Good hidden course.
This course has an interesting layout and it is in good shape at this time of year. It provides some interesting shots, some blind, some tight. The cart paths are very rough, need serious attention, you would be better to walk it.
Hidden Gem!
Enjoy this course. Challenging course & greens that you need to pay attention to.
Nice course , good value
The course offers some challenge to all level of players.
The cart paths could use some tlc
always a challenge
despite tough spring course was in relatively good shape, particularly the greens. make no mistake, if you miss fairways there is alot of danger on this course, but you will use every club in your bag. Several greens have severe slopes which will challenge your putting ability.
This course, as usual , has the best greens you will play. Fairways and rough have bare spot's here and there, but for the money always a great place to play!
Average course, but worth the money!
I played 18 here for $13 via GolfNow and had a great time. The fairways/rough were a little bumpy and had thin/bald/crabby patches in places but were overall better than I would have expected for the price. The greens were in amazing condition. No bare spots, thick, well-cut and fast. There are 6 par 3's, so the course doesn't get too monotonous with par 4's. A lot of the par 5's are very short but still play like par 5's since they're narrow, windy, and difficult to drive in some situations if you drive it 230+
The handicap 1 and 2 earn their ratings and are way more difficult than the other holes. Other than that, the course is very score-able if you don't get greedy and respect the narrowness.
This obviously isn't a top-tier course, but also is obviously worth the price for your average hidden gem for this area. Would recommend to friends!
